Scenario Description
Early in Barbarossa the 1st Panzer Army of Army Group South threatened to encircle a huge pocket of Soviet troops around Uman. The Red Army mounted a massive counter-attack, aiming to cut off the Axis armored spearhead in a pincer move. The result was the largest tank battle in history, until Kursk in 1943. The Soviets fought bravely with over 1,000 tanks, including many feared T-34s, and with infantry standing in trucks firing as they charged the Axis lines. But their command and coordination was poor and they were repelled after four days of battle. The two arms of the Soviet pincer never met at the town of Dubno as planned. During the armored battle, a Panzer Kampfgruppe from the 16th Panzer Division under Major Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz, nicknamed Der Panzergraf (the Panzer Count), clashed with the VIII Mechanized Corps under Brigade Commissar N.K. Popel. The men of the 16th Panzer Division loved Der Panzergraf who was a colorful figure with an unparalleled military career. He was respected by his subordinates and inspirational to his men.

Battle Narrative
The Battle of Brody was a tank battle fought between theist Panzer Group's III Army Corps and XLVIII Army Corps (Motorized) and five mechanized corps of the Soviet 5th Army and 6th Army in the triangle formed by the towns of Dubno, Lutsk and Brody between 23 and 30 June 1941. It is known in Soviet historiography as one of the "border defensive battles". Although the Red Army formations inflicted heavy losses on the German forces, they were outmaneuvered and suffered enormous losses in tanks. Poor Soviet logistics, German air supremacy and a total breakdown in Red Army command and control ensured victory for the Wehrmacht despite overwhelming Red Army numerical and technological superiority.
