Between the Moselle and Rhine rivers, the US Army ground forward on a broad front. The Germans struggled desperately to hold open escape routes to the Rhine. After unsuccessful attempts to slow the American advance, General Hoehne launched two simultaneous counterattacks. The first, by newly arrived SS troops, was to hold open the entrance to the forest road leading to the Rhine .

Operation Veritable was the northern part of an Allied pincer movement that took place between 8 February and 11 March 1945 during the final stages of the Second World War. The operation was conducted by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's Anglo-Canadian 2ist Army Group, primarily consisting of the First Canadian Army under Lieutenant-General Harry Crerar and the British XXX Corps under Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks.
