Scenario Description
The Battle of Champion Hill was the pivotal battle in the Vicksburg Campaign. Union commander Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee fought the Confederate Army, under Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton. Pemberton’s force formed into a three mile long defensive line that ran southwest to northeast along a ridge overlooking Jackson Creek. Around 7 am Union forces engaged the Confederates. Pemberton was unaware that one of three Union columns was moving along the Jackson Road against his unprotected left flank on Champion Hill. If the enemy force was not stopped, it would cut the Confederates off from their Vicksburg base. Pemberton sent troops to defend his left flank. Union forces at the Champion House moved into action.
