The Moscow-Minsk highway was crucial to both sides in the summer of 44. Pushing through, the Russian armies would have a gateway to rapidly move West, trapping German forces along the way. The highway was defended by the fortified and heavily reinforced 78th Sturm (Assault) Division. The 11th Guards Army struck using groups of mine clearing tanks supported by heavier tanks and assault guns. Their orders were simple, breach the defensive belt and destroy the enemy.
