On the morning of November 8th,1942, Allied troops landed in French North Africa, with the hope that the French wouldn’t fight. But in the Oran area, French troops fought against the US Center Task Force of General Fredendall. On November 9th, as US troops were approaching Oran, R-35 tanks (totally obsolete in 1942) of the 2nd RCA counter-attacked toward Tafaraoui but were stopped and destroyed by US tank-destroyers. French infantrymen of the 2nd Zouave Regiment, using their old 75mm field guns as anti-tank guns, put up stiff resistance at Missenhin and Valmy. The battle lasted until November 10th when aceasefire was signed between the Vichy French and Allies.

Battle Narrative
Operation Torch was an Allied invasion of French North Africa during the Second World War. The French possessions in the area were ruled by the Vichy French, formally aligned with Germany but of mixed loyalties. Reports indicated that they might support the Allies. American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme commander of the Allied forces in the European Theater, planned a three-pronged attack on Casablanca (Western), Oran (Center) and Algiers (Eastern), then a rapid move on Tunis. The goal of Operation Torch was to open a second front in Europe, as per request of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union.
