Scenario Description
In the evening of October 23rd,1942, General Montgomery launched Operation Lightfoot in the north of El Alamein. To the south, a diversion operation planned to engage the Axis mobile units deployed in this sector (21.Panzer Division and Division Ariete) and hold them away from the main battle. The infantrymen of the Queen Royal Regiment was ordered to break through near Hill 105, defended by the Italian Airborne Division Folgore. In the meantime, Matilda Scorpion mine flail tanks were tasked with opening several routes in the “January” minefield before dawn. The harsh terrain and Axis artillery shelling delayed the British troops, and daybreak found the Allied forces caught out in the open. The Italian paratroopers of Raggruppamenti Ruspoli fought fiercely and attacked the tanks with Molotov Cocktails. The British attack was stopped in the minefield with most of the tanks destroyed.

Battle Narrative
The Second Battle of El Alamein was a battle of the Second World War that took place near the Egyptian railway halt of El Alamein. The First Battle of El Alamein and the Battle of Alam el Halfa had prevented the Axis from advancing further into Egypt. In August 1942, General Claude Auchinleck had been relieved as Commander-in-Chief Middle East Command and his successor, Lieutenant-General William Gott was killed on his way to replace him as commander of the Eighth Army. Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery was appointed and led the Eighth Army offensive. The Allied victory was the beginning of the end of the Western Desert Campaign, eliminating the Axis threat to Egypt, the Suez Canal and the Middle Eastern and Persian oil fields. The battle revived the morale of the Allies, being the first big success against the Axis since Operation Crusader in late 1941.
