An infantry battalíon had been sweeping an area 12 km west of Tan An for several days with scattered resistance. Since they couldn't get the enemy to stand and fight, they were set to pull out and return to base. It was well known that the VC and NVA often checked LZs after Americans were extracted, in order to collect any useful supplies. A LBBP team was set to accompany the battalion's extraction helicopters and set up a stay behind ambush against any enemy elements that came near the LZ. in a perfect ambush, all the shots tired are one-sided; but not all ambushes are perfect.

Phase III of the Tet Offensive of 1968 (also known as the August offensive or Third offensive) was launched by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Viet Cong (VC) from 17 August to 27 September 1968.
