Scenario Description
To open the Battle of the Netherlands, the Germans had planned a grand endeavor to capture not just The Hague, and the main Dutch military headquarters there, but the Dutch Royal Family and the Cabinet. Crucial to this effort was the seizure of three airfields near The Hague, one of which was Ypenburg. However, the drop of the Battalion of Fallschirmjager Regiment 2 went badly, and the follow-on air landings turned in to a devastating debacle, with most planes being destroyed or diverted. On the ground, throughout the day, the Germans consolidated their forces around the airfield, control of which went back and forth. The Queen ended up evacuating to England, and Ypenburg remained one of the Netherlands’ few tactical successes during the brief campaign.
