Scenario Description
Operation "Star” was underway for the Soviet armies. The 40th Army was to advance to secure Belgorod and then envelope Kharkov from the northwest and west in an effort to try to link up with the 3rd Tank Army. Its four rifle divisions attacked south along the Belgorod-Kharkov highway as a part of a pincer movement. Units of the Grossdeutschland Regiment found themselves surrounded by these advancing Soviet forces on the highway leading north to Belgorod on 11 February 1943- It was mid morning when the commander of the I Battalion, Grenadier Regiment GD (Hptm Remer), was informed that his escape route back to Kharkov had been cut. Remer was ordered to break out and reopen the road to the south with his battle group. Many units of the division were dependent upon this path being cleared: It was that or be cut ofiF and annihilated by the fast approaching Soviet army.

Battle Narrative
Operation Star was a Red Army offensive on the Eastern Front of World War II begun on 2 February 1943. The attack was the responsibility of the Voronezh Front under the command of Filipp Golikov and a part of the larger Voronezh-Kharkov Strategic Offensive Operation. Its main objectives were the cities of Kharkov and Kursk. While initially successful in capturing both cities, the Soviets overextended themselves, allowing German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein to launch a counteroffensive and inflict a defeat on the Soviets in the Third Battle of Kharkov.
