Scenario Description
"At 5 a.m., the enemy barraged our front line, and half an hour later launched a strong counterattack. As the advancing Germans approached the line, it was seen that they were accompanied by tanks, a new experience for our men. Two tanks, working together, breached the line on the right and moved on towards Fremicourt, but the German infantry had not learned the art of cooperation, and the tanks were poorly supported. Approaching the east of the village the tanks drew heavy rifle and Lewis gun fire, and, turning southwards, they moved on towards the 1st Brigade's line. The S.O.S. rocket went up and our barrage could be brought down, scattering the enemy tanks and what was left of their infantry. Thanks to an impetuously launched counterattack, a tank, nicknamed Schnuck, fell into the hands of the New Zealanders that day.” From: The Official History of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

Battle Narrative
The Second Battle of Bapaume was a battle of the First World War that took place at Bapaume in France, from 21 August 1918 to 3 September 1918. It was a continuation of the Battle of Albert and is also referred to as the second phase of that battle. The British and Dominion attack was part of what was later known as the Allies' Hundred Days Offensive. The Second Battle of Bapaume was carried out over a period of two weeks and involved the divisions of IV Corps; the British 5th, 37th, 42nd, and the 63rd Divisions along with the New Zealand Division. On 29 August, elements of the New Zealand Division, after heavy fighting in the days prior, occupied Bapaume as the defending Germans withdrew. It then pushed onto the Bancourt Ridge, to the east of Bapaume.
