Scenario Description
Spring-Summer 1918 brought the last German offensives on the Western Front. General Ludendorff's closing effort was against the Marne River line to the south, 56 miles away from Paris. The French there were reeling. Fresh American divisions rushed in, with the 2nd going west to Belleau Wood and the 3rd east to Cháteau Thierry. The crack German 10 Ersatz-Division then sent beats across the river and launched their Stosstruppen. ln early morning hours of 15 July, heavy German barrages struck the 3rd south of the river. Soon the men of the 38th Regiment had their hands full fending off the determined attackers. Probing Germans came in from three sides, but the Americans held on, yielding only a few thousand yards. The right wing of Ludendorff's offensive failed as it battered against the 38th Regiment. Within three days the Allies even counterattacked. Bloodied but victorious, the 3rd Division got a new nick name, “Rock of the Marne”.
