The Wurm-Lindem-Beeck triangle was a fortiñed area of small hamlets and fields with well-positioned fortifications throughout. It was a part of the Siegfried Line. The Siegfried Line was not a position to be “broken.” It had to be chipped away at piece by piece and often the piece being chipped at required several tries. The 84th lnfantry Division had recently arrived in Europe from the United States and moved into the line in early November but were doled out piecemeal.The “Railsplitters” were finally formed as a full unit late in November just as it was decided to attempt another assault on Lindern. Previously, Lindern had been assaulted from the southeast. This time the “Railsplitters” would try a different direction. This time the men were being asked to run 1,500 meters over open ground,jump a wide anti-tank ditch in front of the town, and then run another 500 meters into the town. The 2nd Battalion was the lead unit and they were to jump off just before dawn. Traveling light so they could move fast, they carried with them nothing but their weapon, bandoliers, and three bars of chocolate.

During the Second World War, Operation Clipper was an Allied offensive by the British XXX Corps to reduce the Geilenkirchen salient in mid-November 1944. Clipper was the preliminary to a wider Allied operation, Operation Queen, to gain control of the Roer valley and of the Hürtgen Forest.
