Scenario Description
Exit No. 1 at Pouppeville was foremost on the mind of the Division Commander, Maj. General Maxwell Taylor, who had just confirmed his whereabouts near Hiesville upon sighting the distinctive, onion-shaped steeple of Ste. Marie-du-Mont. Not having seen any of the 506th, Taylor ordered Lt. Col. Julian Ewell to Pouppeville with a small available force, cobbled together from line company infantrymen and assorted HQ personnel, many of the officers. “Never have so few been led by so many,” said Taylor. Approaching Pouppeville from the west shortly after dawn, it soon became clear that the 3rd Battalion troopers would lead the way for the Headquarters men, who were not well-versed in house-to-house tactics. The numerically superior Germans – many of them Georgian conscripts – held off the paratroopers for several hours, finally falling back on the school house that served as their headquarters.
Location

Around 13,100 American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions made night parachute drops early on D-Day, June 6, followed by 3,937 glider troops flown in by day.
