Scenario Description
General Simonds, commander of the 2nd Canadian Corps, had insisted that he have a supply road with which to maintain the momentum of his attack and planned to use the Goch-Xanten railroad bed for this purpose. The raised track was flanked on both sides by low, soggy farmland. Feeling pressure from higher command, Simonds ordered the 4th Canadian Armoured Division to seize the Hochwald Gap and continue on to Xanten. The western entrance to the gap was controlled by a small rise, Point 73.

Operation Veritable was the northern part of an Allied pincer movement that took place between 8 February and 11 March 1945 during the final stages of the Second World War. The operation was conducted by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's Anglo-Canadian 21st Army Group, primarily consisting of the First Canadian Army under Lieutenant-General Harry Crerar and the British XXX Corps under Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks.
