Scenario Description
Since early morning the German 71st Infantry Division had been attacking towards the downtown district with the capture of the main ferry landing as its goal. Led by Lt. Col. Roske’s 194th Regiment, good progress was made through the residential section against weak resistance, and this in spite of mounting casualties. General von Hartmann, commander of the 71st Division, had warned Roske to cover his exposed right flank. Roske responded that he would “need every available man” to reach the Volga, and left von Hartmann to worry about covering the flank. Roske sensed that the Russian defenses were weak, and he wanted to continue his forward momentum. The 3rd Battalion and the combined 1st/2nd Battalions had reached the main rail station around 1200 hours, where they paused to regroup, reconnoiter, and bring up heavy weapons. One of the largest scenarios ever made for ASL. 181 squads and 29 AFV battle it out over the blasted landscape of Stalingrad. A game of attack for both players, with the Russians receiving large reinforcements half way through the game.

Battle Narrative
In the Battle of Stalingrad, Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad in Southern Russia. Marked by fierce close-quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians in air raids, it is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare, with an estimated 2 million total casualties. After their defeat at Stalingrad, the German High Command had to withdraw considerable military forces from the Western Front to replace their losses.
