Most of the paratroopers were wounded, including Taylor himself, but continued to fight as they had no place to retreat. The 7th Battalion’s commander, Colonel Poett, recognized the severity of the situation when a panzerkampfwagen drove past the entrance to his headquarters. Poett immediately ordered Major Howard to lend a platoon of the Ox and Bucks, currently defending the bridge, to assist Taylor in Benouville.

Battle Narrative
Pegasus Bridge, originally called the Bénouville Bridge after the neighbouring village, is a road crossing over the Caen Canal, between Caen and Ouistreham in Normandy. The original bridge, built in 1934, is now a war memorial and is the centrepiece of the Memorial Pegasus museum at nearby Ranville. It was replaced in 1994 by a modern design which, like the old one, is a bascule bridge.
