The attack plan then called for a brief interlude to allow fresh troops of the second wave to come up and for continued bombardment of the next objective – the imposing halls of the factory itself. Meanwhile, the bloodied survivors of Guriev’s 39th Guards Rifle Division, tasked with defending those wrecked shops and workstations, dressed their wounds, all the while enduring unhealthy amounts of German high explosives. Suddenly, a few minutes past 1000, piercing whistles announced that the Wehrmacht troops were once again advancing – this time taking their second step.
