In February 1941 the new formed Axis Afrika Korps under Command of General Rommel begun there offensive . Rommel ordered his 15nd Armour Division in 3 waves to engage the Allies around the old Spanish Fort of Mechili. The Fort was defended by the Allied 3rd India Motorized Division, an armour division of Mathilda tanks(slow but strong)and scattered troops from the desert. The Allies had a lack of Anti-Tank and Artillerie so they called for back-up from the 9nd Australian Army who was passing by on there way to Derna. On April 6 Rommel ordered the begin of the assault and on the following night the allies abandon Mechili and retreat to Tobruk. Rommel's Army had a good start in the African dessert, but he had to cancel the chase because his supplies were running out.

Operation Sonnenblume was the name given to the dispatch of German troops to North Africa in February 1941, during the Second World War. The Italian 10th Army had been destroyed by the British and Allied Western Desert Force attacks during Operation Compass (9 December 1940 – 9 February 1941). The first units of the new Deutsches Afrikakorps departed Naples for Africa and arrived on 11 February 1941. On 14 February, advanced units of the 5th Light Afrika Division, Aufklärungsbataillon 3 and Panzerjägerabteilung 39 arrived in Tripoli, Libya and were sent immediately to the front line at Sirte.
