Scenario Description
The Landings at Cape Torokina on November 1, 1943 were the beginning of the Bougainville, campaign in the Solomon Islands. Most of the US Marines faced limited enemy fire and pushed inland slowly through dense jungle and a knee-deep swamp. However, the landings on Puruata Island, a small spit of land in the bay, and the southern beaches around Cape Torokina were a hot spot of enemy Resistance. Although the Japanese forces were limited in this area, their defensive positions were interlocking and effective. The 1st Battalion of the 3rd Marines ran into heavy machine gun fire and shelling from Japanese 75-mm guns as they neared Cape Torokin, forcing them to engage the enemy immediately after landing. Only after fierce fighting and significant valor were the US Marines able to establish a beachhead and begin landing supplies. Puruata Island was secured at about the same time, although some Japanese remained until the next day.
