Scenario Description
After their attack by surprise of the main French garrisons in Indochina on the 9th of March 1945, Japanese troops pursued the French troops which had escape to the massacre. French General Alessandri led a column of surviving soldiers to the China border. The 3rd battalion of the 5th Regiment of Foreign Legion (3/5 REI) under the command of Captain Lenoir was the rearguard of this column. On the 11th of April 1945, the battalion received the order to stop the Japanese near the plain of Dien Bien Phu, on the Nam Youn river to protect the withdrawing of the main column. With the reinforcement of some French commandos (called Gaur K), landed by parachute on Dien Bien Phu on the 17th of March, 80 soldiers of the Foreign Legion stopped the Japanese advance during all the day, then before to be surrounded by the enemy troops superior in number, the last legionnaires were withdrawing in the jungle.

The Japanese coup d'état in French Indochina, known as Meigō Sakusen, was a Japanese operation that took place on 9 March 1945 towards the end of World War II. With Japanese forces losing the war and the threat of an Allied invasion of Indochina imminent, the Japanese were concerned about an uprising against them by French colonial forces.
