In January 1940, during the Winter War, Stalin ordered the 2nd Soviet Ski Brigade, under the command of Colonel Konstan Dolin, to relieve the 54th Rifle Division who the Finns had encircled and cut off. Dolin, moved into Finland toward the Kuhmo sector. Finish Ski troops, however, spotted Dolin's column and with the Finnish battle cry of "No Quarter", they attacked. Forced to retreat, the Soviet skiers, unfamiliar with the area, fell back to the forest around Vetko village. Unable to make a defensive stand, they soon found themselves cut off as well; only a scattered few managed to escape.

Battle Narrative
The Winter War was a war between the Soviet Union (USSR) and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion of Finland on 30 November 1939, three months after the outbreak of World War II, and ended three and a half months later with the Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 March 1940. Despite superior military strength, especially in tanks and aircraft, the Soviet Union suffered severe losses and initially made little headway. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from the organisation.
