Scenario Description
Starting on 9 September, the Battle of Bzura was the largest battle of Unternehmen Fall Weiss. It was also one of the last battles that involved a significant cavalry contingent. After losing contact with Polish high command, General Tadeusz Kutrzeba, commander of Army Pomorze and Army Pozna?, opted for a risky counterattack to prevent his forces from being surrounded. Noticing that the German 8th Army was spread thin over a 30 kilometer line, General Kutrzeba ordered an offensive that inflicted heavy losses on the German forces who were thrown back about 20 kilometers. The Polish cavalry brigades proved their worth by attacking the vulnerable flanks and harassing the rear. After recapturing several towns through a string of victories, the Polish forces had to set up defensive positions as German generals finally took the offensive seriously and diverted additional forces to the battle. German numerical and tactical superiority, combined with their air supremacy, forced the defenders into a shrinking pocket. Only a handful of Polish units managed to break out of the encirclement and both Polish armies were eventually destroyed as fighting forces.
