After Operation Totalize, Montgomery insisted on the necessity to take Falaise so the 1st Canadian Army quickly launched a new offensive: Operation Tractable. After a massive air bombing campaign, the 2nd Canadian Army Corps and 1st Polish Armored division crossed the Laizon river and crushed the German positions held by the 85th Infantry Division. Despite the fierce Resistance of elements of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend, the Canadians entered Falaise on Aug. 17. A group of Waffen-SS entrenched in the girls grammar school fought all day until death. By August 18, Falaise was finally free, but a field of ruins...

The Falaise Pocket or Battle of the Falaise Pocket was the decisive engagement of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. A pocket was formed around Falaise, Calvados, in which the German Army Group B, with the 7th Army and the Fifth Panzer Army were encircled by the Western Allies. The battle is also referred to as the Battle of the Falaise Gap. The battle resulted in the destruction of most of Army Group B west of the Seine, which opened the way to Paris and the Franco-German border for the Allied armies on the Western Front.
