Scenario Description
Successive outflanking maneuvers down the west coast of Malaya by the Japanese, forced General Percival to create a new defense line to the south in Johore state. Percival urged Lieutenant-General Lewis "Piggy" Heath, commander of III Indian Corps, to delay the Japanese advance as long as possible with the 11th Indian Division north of Kuala Lumpur while the positions in Johore were being strengthened. 12th Indian Brigade was deployed north of Slim River where the road and rail ran together, while the 28th Indian Brigade was deployed on the northern bank of the Slim River guarding the road and rail bridges. The III Indian Corps faced Colonel Ando's pursuing 42nd Regiment supported by tanks and engineers, with a battalion either side of the road feeling for the flanks of the British position. Despite intense shell fire, Japanese tanks under the command of Second Lieutenant Sadanobu Watanabe rushed the British defenses along the road. At each bridge, Watanabe leaped from his tank under fire and cut demolition wires with his saber, allowing the following tanks and infantry to cross. The British defenders resisted fiercely but after 19 hours of continuous fighting and large numbers of casualties, they were forced to retreat.
