Scenario Description
After having crossed the Meuse river at Maastricht, the 4th Panzer division arrived in the region of Hannut. Once there, the Germans confronted the French Cavalry Corps of General Prioux, which had moved into Belgium as part of the Dyle plan. On May 12th, German Panzers engaged their French counterparts. On May 13th, both sides received reinforcements: several GRDI (Infantry Division Recon Groups) came to help French forces, while the Germans were reinforced by the 3rd Panzer division and 5 Infantry divisions. The Luftwaffe controlled the sky over the fierce fighting. By the evening of May 13th, Prioux's Cavalry Corps had succeeded in its mission to thwart the enemy advance, but had suffered heavy losses. This costly delay tactic gave French infantry divisions enough time to prepare the line of defense as laid out by the Dyle plan. Three years before Kursk, Hannut was the first large-scale tank battle with almost 1500 tanks.
