Scenario Description
For the past month, Hill 192, a dominating height east of the Vire River, has given the Germans a superb observation position on all the approaches to St-Lo, as well as the rear areas of V Corps as far as the beaches. The German 5th and 9th Parachute Regiments have relied on a number of strongpoints that can support each other by interlocking fire on all gaps. Hedgerow dikes have made field fortifications easy. Often these embankments are thick enough to allow them to dig in and tunnel laterally, providing shelter and living quarters for several men underneath the hedge. Nearby foxholes have been dug along the hedgerow, with steps for firing positions. On the morning of July 11th, the men of 38th Infantry supported by 741st Tank Battalion and 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion are ordered to clear 'Kraut Corner' and take Hill 192 proper. The 23rd infantry is ordered to secure Saint-Georges d'Elle and move south to take La Croix Rouge. After a terrible fight, Kraut Corner is taken. On the left wing however, "Purple Heart Draw", well covered by enemy fire, prevents the 23rd Infantry from gaining any ground. Lighter opposition on Hill 192 allows the 1st Battalion of the 38th Infantry to move forward to the crest of the hill. Hill 192 is won and with it, the road to St-Lo and its surroundings. This greatly increases the odds of success for the large-scale armored offensive the US High Command has been itching to mount since early June.

Battle Narrative
The Battle of Saint-Lô is one of the three conflicts in the Battle of the Hedgerows, which took place between July 7–19, 1944, just before Operation Cobra. Saint-Lô had fallen to Germany in 1940, and, after the Invasion of Normandy, the Americans targeted the city, as it served as a strategic crossroads. American bombardments caused heavy damage and a high number of casualties, which resulted in the martyr city being called "The Capital of Ruins", popularized in a report by Samuel Beckett.
