Scenario Description
By the 3rd month of the battle on Okinawa, the remnants of the Japanese army had withdrawn to the south end of the island. Although the front had narrowed for the assaulting Marine Divisions, there were still irreducible pockets of Japanese Resistance that held up. The US 96th Infantry Division was pulled from the line to deal with the Japanese 24th Division which continued to put up fierce Resistance in a large pocket near Medeera and Makabe, in the center of the peninsula. Supported by artillery and the 2nd Battalion of the 5th Marines, they launched an attack on June 20th. Three days of hellish hand-to-hand combat ensued in the hills and caves the Japanese mastered so well.

Battle Narrative
The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Marine and Army forces against the Imperial Japanese Army. The initial invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The Kerama Islands surrounding Okinawa were preemptively captured on March 26th, (L-6) by the 77th Infantry Division. The 98-day battle lasted from March 26th until July 2nd, 1945. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were planning to use Kadena Air Base on the large island of Okinawa as a base for Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands, 340 mi (550 km) away.
