Chief Pontiac besieged Detroit during the summer of 1763. A British relief force led by Captain Dalzell reached the fort and decided to immediately attack Pontiac’s village. The relief force marched out of Fort Detroit near midnight on 31 July with their march covered by two gunboats in the Detroit River. The Indian village lie on the other side of a run on high ground. Pontiac had been alerted about the British plans and had his men set up to ambush them.

The Battle of Bloody Run was fought during Pontiac's War on July 31, 1763 on what now is the site of Elmwood Cemetery. In an attempt to break Pontiac's siege of Fort Detroit, about 250 British troops attempted to make a surprise attack on Pontiac's encampment.
