On September 8, 1781 General Greene with around 2,200 men advanced upon a British camp at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. The “Swamp Fox," General Francis Marion, who knew the area well de vised the plan of attack. The British commander at the camp was Lt. Colonel Alexander Stewart. Greene formed his army into two lines. Militia was placed in the front line with regular Continental troops in the second line. The British were at their breakfast when the Americans surprised them. Quickly forming into a line the British attacked with a bayonet charge at the militia, breaking the American line. Driving ahead the British next broke through the line of North Carolina Continentals. Greene ordered the Continentals of Virginia and Maryland to attack.
