The Battle of Stony Point took place on July 16, 1779. In a well planned and executed nighttime attack, Continental Army troops under the command of General “Mad Anthony” Wayne conducted a quick and daring assault on the British outpost in Stony Point, New York, approximately 30 miles north of New York City. Stony Point was a British fortified position that had been captured the patriots earlier. It was garrisoned by the 17th Regiment of Foot reinforced by Tory's, artillery, gunboats, and other units under the command of Lt. Col. Henry Johnson.
