Scenario Description
Following the British victory at Brandywine on September 11, 1777, and subsequent occupation of Philadelphia, British forces had gone into bivouac. Washington in the meantime had gathered together an army of almost 11,000 men, of which 3,000 were militia. Knowing the terrain that Howe held and realizing that the British had not prepared fortifications, Washington saw an opportunity to smash part of the British army. Washington's plan of attack called for numerous separate columns to hit the British at or just before dawn, hoping for surprise. During the initial attack, the Americans rolled up the British outpost. They put up more Resistance than Washington was expecting. Howe was surprised at the strength of the American assault, which he thought at first was merely a raid. Washington's assault carried up to the Chew House, where 120 British soldiers had turned it into a fortress, firing from holes made in shutters.
