Scenario Description
In September of 1777 British Lt. General John Burgoyne began his expedition. His path took him south from Canada toward Albany, NY. He encountered little Resistance in the early stages, and easily overtook positions as he marched. The Resistance increased once he crossed the Hudson River. Horatio Gates and a force of nearly 7,900 moved to meet Burgoyne’s army of nearly 6,500 men. Gates had fortified on Bemis Heights. The British advanced in three columns. The left column guarded supply. The center column, assaulted the area around Bemis Heights. The right column would turn the left flank of the Americans. Arnold commanded the American left and was not content to wait for assault. He took advantage and ordered an "in-force reconnaissance" under General Daniel Morgan to attack the British right. Morgan engaged the front of the column near Freeman's Farm. Their first volley sent the British into retreat. Morgan's men charged, then retreated when they encountered Resistance from the British Grenadiers.

Battle Narrative
The Battles of Saratoga marked the climax of the Saratoga campaign, giving a decisive victory to the Americans over the British in the American Revolutionary War. British General John Burgoyne led a large invasion army southward from Canada in the Champlain Valley, hoping to meet a similar British force marching northward from New York City and another British force marching eastward from Lake Ontario; the southern and western forces never arrived, and Burgoyne was surrounded by American forces in upstate New York. He fought two small battles to break out which took place 18 days apart on the same ground, 9 miles (14 km) south of Saratoga, New York. They both failed.
