Scenario Description
The stunning successes of the Russian counterattacks, Operations Uranus, Saturn, and Little Saturn, resulted in the shattering of the Axis front lines along the Don River. On the extreme edge of this battlefield stood the units of the Italian Alpine Corps. Ordered by German High Command to stand fast on the Don the Alpinos of the Corps were encircled during the Little Saturn Operation. The attempt to breakout was an arduous affair that tested the mettle of the men of the Alpine Corps. Each Soviet blocking position had to be overcome by Alpinos suffering with frostbite and dealing with malfunctioning weapons in the sub-zero degree weather. One such position was the village of Nikoiaevka where the Alpino of the Tridentina Division conducted repeated assaults on Russian positions. During the climax of the successful final assault General Reverberi personally lead his division into the village shouting ”Avanti Tridentina, Avantil"
