Scenario Description
The Soviet Kalinin Front offensive at the beginning of winter 1942 successfully cut off and encircled the key transportation hub of Velikiye Luki. The German 277th lnfantry Regt. under orders from Hitler to hold at all costs resolutely defended the city. Under constant pressure from units of the 3rd Shock Army, the battered remnants of the defenders were forced back to the Citadel—a key defensive position in the western half of town. As 1943 arrived, the end drew nearer for the 277th. In a last ditch effort to relieve the town, elements of the 5th Gebirgsjáger (Mountain) lnfantry Regt. assaulted the Soviet 113th Rifle Regt., attempting to break through to the Citadel.
