After St Hippolyte was initially taken by Company F of the 142nd, they were expelled by a German counterattack. The American return was spearheaded by Sgt Ellis R Weicht, who advancing down the winding streets overcame two machinegun nests and then maintained fire on German 20mm guns as they were attacked by artillery. He led his squad onwards and spotted a roadblock. Sgt Weicht’s Medal of Honor was to be posthumous, as we was killed by a direct hit from an anti-tank gun.
