Scenario Description
In one of the most controversial actions of the war, the 36th were repeatedly ordered by General Mark Clark to attack across the fast-flowing Gari River in featureless terrain overlooked by hills between the 20th and 22nd of January. The attacks all resulted in eventual withdrawal with heavy loss of life, but were intended to distract German attention from the landings at Anzio. The 141st and 143rd Regiments were decimated and the 142nd only avoided a similar fate by a late decision to call off their attack. The Germans for their part noticed nothing more than a ‘reconnaissance-in-force’. General Walker launched the initial attacks at night to try to minimize casualties, but after they were repulsed the 36th were ordered the next day to attack again ‘immediately’.
